I have a Petrol/TVO E1A and have found a number (1218886)on the bulkhead plate that matches the number stamped on the flywheel housing near the starter motor. Should there be a serial number on the engine itself and if so, (a) where? and (b) should this be the same as the other two? Can anybody give me a clue as to when this tractor was built, please?

I also have a diesel E1A with 1237828 in similar locations and no obvious engine number, but the UK registration document (Government document, not Fordson issue) shows no chassis number, but an engine number of 1266901. If the answer to (b) above is what I think it is, I suspect this means the registration document was originally issed to another vehicle. Whatever - again, does anyone have a clue when 1237828 was built, please?

If anyone out there has an E1A with serial 1266901 - let's talk!

Bob,
I am in Norfolk. Your E1ADKN is one of the earliest I have come across. It was built in February 1952 only two months after the tractor was announced. The serial number next to the starter should correspond with the one on the plate on the firewall. Your tractor should have seperate starting carburettor and automatic change from petrol to TVO when hot. This system may have been modified however to a change over tap on the bottom of the fuel tank. Please keep it as near as possible to original and don't fit it with fibreglass parts. Try and find parts that date back to the time. I have a E1ADKN built in September 1952 still in nearly original condition.

Your E1ADDN should have the number in the same place. Ford used this number as both engine and serial number throughout production of the Major range but moved it to engine later in the builds.Your diesel was also built in the same month as mine, September, mine being 1235924. Look in the photos on this site and you will find one of her ploughing. Either your tractor is made up of two, original engine and older rear end, or your log book is wrong as this is for a tractor, built in September 1953.

Looks like you have two really early ones. What condition are they in? Mine still works for a living and I have only just replaced the original front tyres.
regards
Brian

Brian - what would these pages do without you! Thanks again for your help. I am on Bucks/Beds border, about 10 miles S of Milton Keynes - you may remember you gave me some advice re. the brakes on the Super Major I also have. All three tractors came of the same smallholding. The owner bought the petrol/TVO one secondhand, but it kept oiling up, so he put it in a barn and bought the diesel. Then that began to play up, so he bought the Super Major - also because it had a loader. He sold up recently and I acquired all three. I shall do what I can to keep these original, but as I am sure you know, it's not easy or cheap. The Super major is OK and I have taken it on the road. The diesel runs but needs some TLC. The Petrol/TVO has not been started for 30 years and was lacking a generator -but I managed to get a replacement from a very helpful guy in Devon. It also had the steering box robbed by the last owner but I got one at a jumble last year and hope to fit it as soon as I have time - I want to get it on the road this spring. Still need to get some 'odds and sods' like a choke cable. Also the wing lights are not complete and the rear licence plate light is missing. I found a source for replicas of the licence plate lights - at GBP 75 each, though, I don't think so! Rubber work does not look to be original and, in any case, it's all very perished, so will have to be replaced.

Sorry - got carried away there. I think you are right about the log book - it's from a different tractor, although the one I have carries a tax disc with the log book registration on it. I need to get it sorted out so I can tax/insure it.

Regards

Bob

Bob, I have serial # 1250704...Gas...53...England Built...Fordson New Major and am told by Brian that its a E1ADN because its Gas/petrol...if it was kerosene/gas it would be E1ADKN...I take it that Deasel would be something else. I am looking for parts, do you know of a source?

Thanks!
