Can someone tell me if I can replace a DNN4 head with a FL head on a December 1960 Super Major?

The DNN4 head doesn't have the compression release lever on it as does the FL which has been all redone. Will I run into gasket trouble with this switch?

The FL head had a modified intake port and the injector nozils were changed. It should be fine on your 1960 Super Major, but the service leters I have state you have to use the later nozil. Having said that, I reconditioned the nozils in my 1962 Super last November and the later type nozil is the only one available. I am at work and I don't have my books with me, but I think the early nozils were NL121 and the later ones NL141. I will check and confirm Monday. Brian may give you the answer before then.

The head gasket is dependent on the sleeves fitted. Around late 1961 the blocks were changed, the later block having a seal at the top of the sleeve as well as the botom. Th early engines did not have the raised ridge around the sleeve like the later ones. This ridge caused the gasket change. All replacment sleeves have the same ridge. Use the gasket to suit your sleeves.

John,
Steven has given you all the information you need. I would not worry too much about the injectors as the ealier nozzels have been dicontinued for some time and the difference you would note in performance is minimal. However the head gasket to be used will depend on your liners. If you have the ones with a raised ridge, the composite gasket should be used and a check made that the liners lower edge protrudes between .002 to .004 above the surface of the block.
Why do you need a decompressor? Are you starting her by hand or are we here in England spoilt by our weather? regards
Brian

the decompressor lever is nice if you have to rotate the engine for timing etc, but mostly I have to use my diesels when it is below O Fahrenheit, and opening the valves a hair helps starting.

Also I happen to have this FL head left over from another tractor and it was just all redone at a cost of $400.

I'll probably leave the head alone and install a block heater for the winter. I wonder why the decompressors were installed on some tractors and not others.

Most tractors exported to colder climates had the de-compressor. I had a 1962 Super Major in New Zealand, it had the lever. My Australian 1962 Super Major tractor doesn't. Most of the local (Aussie) enthusiasts think that only early Majors had the de-compressor. They are so wrong.
