If the pump runs low or out of oil it is a very costly repair. Damage/wear can happen if diesel contaminated the oil. Others on this net advised (Diesel Dan) to "change the oil in the Simms pump everytime you change oil in the engine or pay the consiquences (spl?)". There is a drain and fill opening in plain sight. My advise, change the oil once in awhile and check it every few months.

Nellie,
You are talking about the Minimec pump on the later tractors. The older vaccum governed pump only required oil after it had been repaired to stop it running without lubrication until the diesel level built up again. The Minimec pump also uses diesel to lubricate the pumping elements. The oil lubricates the governor mechanism. Diesel is again allowed to mix with the oil and the main problem when this happens is the governor housing overfills and the governor does not work properly. If your engine smokes heavily and will not pull, check the oil in the governor. This should be drained down to the level weekly and changed with the engine oil as you say.

Brian

Helton,
Oil goes in through the side cover on the pump and should be re-filled with 1/6th of a pint of HD 30 after major pump dismantling. After the initial fill no more oil is required throughout the life of the pump as the diesel which collects in the cam box does all the lubrication required.
If your diesel tech. has drained the pump, remove the side plate and put the oil in. The drain off tube on the pump will ensure you do not overfill but be careful not to get any dirt inside the pump when filling.
regards
Brian
