Simms Pump noise

I am looking at buying a 57 or 58 Major. It seems to run well and pull hard, but the injection pump was making a clicking sound that was as loud if not louder than the engine itself. Since I haven't heard one of these run before, is this normal?

Thanks,

Dann Parker

Another note on this coupling. I once had to change the metal part on the side where the bolts go through. One side broke out around the bolt head and the timing slipped way back to where the tractor wouldn't hardly run and blew white smoke. Couldn't figure it out for a while what was going on. As a temporary fix, we cut pieces of steel post anchor to put under the bolts and that ran fine for a year or so until I got the new part installed. Also had to change the drive shaft from the engine as it got bent in this process.

These guys are right. Its your drive coupler. Mine did the same thing. When I found out what it cost to replace the two coupler halves and the fibre insert I drove shims into the coupler to tighten it up then wrapped it with 3m electrical tape to hold them in place. I know it sounds crude but my tractor ran for a long time that way.If you do opt to change the parts, its a good way to isolate the noise first to make sure that another prob is not present, Bill

Dann,
Helton is correct. It is the fibre drive coupling. These can be tightened a little by slackening the clamp bolt on the engine side and levering that half of the coupling towards the pump.

Brian

I'll be interested to hear the replies, mine does the same thing. But I'm pretty sure it's just the exterior coupling driven by the pump.Check you later.(North Carolina)
