I have a '56 FMD with a good strong front end loader. Needless to say it is a bear to steer with a full bucket of dirt. I would like to put power steering on it. Does anyone know if you can mount the appropriate eqquipment from a power major on it, and if so, where can one get the parts. Also, will the power steering pump and cylinder from '60's and '70's vintage Ford land yachts work for this application?

Thanks,
Karl

Karl-I had the same problem last year. For what its worth--I couldn't find an original FMD power steering pump and if I could I probably didn't want to pay the price. I used a power steering unit out of what I think was an International combind--I am guessing around '70 model (approximately 36 inches in length)-payed $100. I bolted one end to the frame of the loader support and the other to arm of the front end that steers. I had to weld a part on the International power steering unit to activate it from the steering wheel (using only the pieces from the Fordson). You can use any power steering pump that has a resevior. I used a pump I had from a '68 Ford 3/4 ton pickup. I put it in place of the alternator (which I hardly ever needed anyway) It worked fine. The hose connections were a little tricky but I found most of the parts at a local hardware store (one specializing in plumbing). My Fordson is a '57 and my father has a '53 (he also retrofitted his with a Case unit). I do my snowblowing/plowing and dirt moving with the unit and I wouldn't live without the power steering now that it's installed. I hope this isn't too confusing. Good luck!
