Well, to show what an amatuer I am, I took off to do a bit of bush hogging "grass mowing really" and left a trail of oil around the barn lot. having just changed the oil I failed to get the filter tight enough "I didn't want to strip it" I tend to be over cautious. I'm wondering about the brakes, they are really worn because the Old Gentleman who had it kept it in service plowing and turned with the brakes mostly. He had a 3 disc plow that hung way back there and broke the lift arm (before he figured out how to tie it down with check chains)I didn't keep it.How big is the job of brake replacement? Also any ideas on the parking brake mechanism slipping off.I enjoy reading all the post,( Especially the ones that take up so much space)About Fordsons of course.

Helton, on your oil filter, do you have AC or Fram filter housing? The NAPA (Wix) filters I buy (1193, 51193) come with a new body gasket and the cork spacers that are necessary for the Fram housing. The body sealing gaskets simply do not fit right in the Fram housing. I reuse the old gasket and don't disturb it unless absolutely necessary. I much prefer the AC oil filter. The sealing of the Fram housing at the bolt head is also an inferior design I think. I had to change the little copper washer under the bolt head. Got it from a diesel truck shop. On the brakes, I think the worst part of the job is having to take the wheels off. Why they designed the Major with that little housing that goes nowhere is beyond me. Why didn't they just put the brake assemblies right up against the rear end casting so you could get to them without taking off the wheels. I have both fluid and weights on my rear tires. I would suggest changing oil seals when you fix the brakes.

John,
They did put the brakes against the rear casting on the E27N Major which has a similar rear end. Then they could not stop oil from getting into the brakes.
I have my wheels set at 60" and I am not small but I sit underneath with my back against the wheel and service the brakes with no trouble. In the dealership, Fords gave you a certain time to service each side brake. If you could do it quicker then you got a bonus. The only time we ever took the wheels off was at 52" and 56" wheel settings. In fact I had to have the L/H brake stripped on mine three weeks ago and did it standing up with the wheel on.
regards
Brian
