I would be grateful for some advice on the restarting from 2 years rest of a Fordson Super Major, which has a crankshaft driven pump for a front loader.
The yard that I bought it off tried to start it after 12 months standing, and got the odd fire with a bit of ether, but it wouldnt run. The starter motor was gently expiring. This is now serviced, and ready to fit. The tank had been removed for steering repairs, so I will be using fresh fuel, and eventually bleeding the system. Do you suggest any thing further?
Clean injectors?
I seem to live near to a hot bed of Fordson activity, being 10 km from Gisborne in Victoria, Australia. My other fordsons are a 1948 E27N cable front loader, and a 1955 pet/kero running on petrol. Are there any mods for the carburation if only petrol is used? I have fitted tubular manifolds as the old manifold cracked badly several times. I also have a 754 county and an 8600 (and two ford passenger cars!)
Thanks for the many postings, Peter Wilson

Well I posted this reply last night, but it appears to not be on here, so, i will re-post it. I appologise if it comes up sometime later and appears on here twice.
Hi Peter,
I hope you have your Super Major running by now. If not, I would be happy for you to email me and ask any questions you may like answered regarding the tractor. Presently I am rebuilding a Fordson Super Major, built 12/63, but good parts are hard to come by, especially for the transmition. Feel free to email me with any questions/comments regarding the tractor. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards Gary.

Brian:
Not yet. Had a site visit from Steven B who lives 10 km away. He got his shoes dirty on the black clay!
Just got a fuel filter as the old one was suspended from its pipes.
However, as the steering box had been taken off and the carcase was in unprotected storage, the gearbox appeared full of viscous cafe-au-lait. I suspected rain had helped raise the level, and when I drained the gearbox, the coffee drained out, with some water. With the belt pulley cover off and the bottom plate held by 6 bolts off (which also drained some of the rear axle - more oil needed), the gears seem remarkably good, and I can statically select all 8. I will fill with oil and see what happens. I do have a spare rear end.
Back to the fuel: I will clean and assemble the tank, and fit once the steering bax is back on. Steven suggested a view of each injector pumping, and if one does not, minor disassenbly and boiling in diesel. I suspect it will be a full days work to get everything back together, and just in case it does start, I need to disconnect the crankshaft mounted pump as I think the reservoir is dry. I now know why farmers have large oil drums lying around!
Will advise how the start (or not) goes,
Peter.

If ether has been used in an effort to start it up, then chances are that the engine is damaged. Cracked pistons, probably. Perform a compression check, then you'll know.
