Hi everyone.

My '56 FMD has a front end loader which is powered by the internal hydraulics through the jack tapping port. A line goes from the port to my external set of controls. The problem is that the guy who set it up did not put a shut off valve in said line, thus rendering the three point hitch virtually useless. If you lift the bucket to it's absolute limit, you can operate the three point hitch from the external controls, but it only stays up if you hold the lever back. If you let the lever go to the middle position, it drops like a rock.

Anyhow, I called my uncle who told me that my Grandfather's '55 had a simple brass gate type water valve in the jack tapping line, and that it worked for over 30 years without incident. I spoke to a guy at a farm implement store about it, and he recommended against such a solution on safety grounds. However, the flow regulator valve he wanted to sell me would cost $150.00 Canadian (thats at least 5 bucks American!)

I need advice as I don't want to muck around with this. Also, I shimmed the pressure relief valve (only one washer) so that I could handle large round bales to feed the (growing) herd of equine welfare cases on my place. (Actually, they do work summers).

Any advice from my "mechanical betters" would be appreciated.

Karl

PS: To Brian; my apologies on not keeping everything original. :)

Karl,
Shame on you!!

The tap you want is a gate valve or a needle valve. The safety problem is the material not the idea. If you can find a steel one you will be OK.They are available. ( By the sound of it so are GOLD ones by the price you have been quoted).
regards
Brian
