Battery Polarity

I recently bought a 1962 Fordson Super Dexta. The battery had a dead cell and when I took it out to replace it, I noticed the previous owner(or someone) had the battery terminals installed incorrectly. ie... a negative ground instead of a positive ground. My question is this... what happens when the battery is grounded incorrectly? The idiot lights go out when the engine starts so the battery appears to be getting a charge. Any info anyone can provide, I certainly would appreciate.

If the battery had been fitted incorrectly both the regulator and the dynamo would have failed within a few minutes. The cutout points would have welded together and the dynamo would have burnt out as soon as you switched the engine off and left the tractor with it trying to act as an electric motor. It is possible to convert your tractor from a Positive earth to a Negative earth by polarising the dynamo before fitting the terminals to it. The other possibility is that the battery may have been charged in reverse by someone. Use a volt meter to check this out before re-arranging the battery terminals. If all the lights go out and the thing is keeping the battery charged, think twice before changing things.

Hey Bryan, thanks for your input. I agree with you, I think someone probably has re-rigged it to a negative ground. I haven't been able to find a decent wiring diagram to check, and the generator appears to be charging. Everything electrical appears to be operating normally. I guess the old adage " If ain't broke don't attempt to fix it!" applies here. Do you know of anywhere I could find a decent wiring diagram to satisify my curiosity?
