Tiny block crack

Hello everyone!

I think I have discovered the reason for a small oil leak from the region of the head gasket on the left hand side front of the engine.

Cleaning oil and accumulated gunk from the block, I noticed that there is a section of block starting to crack away where presumably the left front head bolt goes. It looks as though someone has tightened the head bolt without making sure that the hole was clean and clear of oil, and it looks to have been this way for a looong time. There is evidence of repainting inside the crack!

What's the best approach to fixing this? Can I simply zap it from the outside with the stick welder?

There is a process by Irontite that uses tapered cast iron plugs that you stitch in the crack. You would have to redrill and tap the hole afterwards. I use a product called Ceramic Seal to seal the plugs as I put them in.

J-P I wouldn't suggest zapping it with a stick welder... you'll more than likely make it worse.
If improper torque procedures were used when the head was installed.... either in sequence or torque applied... it usually will crack the head.. and not the block. I can see where this corner head bolt could however fracture the block.
There are a variety of steel impregnated epoxy's that may be useful as a 'cold fix'. If you have an opportunity to remove the head... it would be interesting to closely examine that corner... to see if you can determine how serious the internal portion of the fracture is... ie, just into the water jacket or into the casting around the sleeve liner. However, visual inspection is only cursory.... magnafluxing would be necessary to determine the precise extent of the fracture.
Don't pass up a cheap tractor with a good block
John Paul!! You may need it.

Summary... any attempt to weld externally, without removing the engine, stripping the block, and properly pre-heating and post-heating and controlled cooling of the block will most likely do far more harm than just leaving it alone.

Thanks for your suggestions folks. I think I'll leave it as it is for the time being as it has clearly been that way for a while. When I have another excuse for taking the head off I'll try to do something about it.
