Hello!

I am looking at purchasing a Fordson Major and was wondering about the history of these tractors. Were these primarily manufactured in the UK? I live in the US and have not seen too many of them, but I'm the first to admit that I am far from a tractor expert!

Thank you in advance!
Thom

The English Fordson Major sold in the US was introduced in 1951 and designated the E1A Fordson Major. This tractor replaced the E27N Fordson Major.

There were three models, the E1ADN (Gasolene), the E1ADKN (Kerosene) and The E1ADDN (Diesel). The E1ADKN was droped in 1956. Thes tractors were produced in modified form until 1964. When introduced, the diesel tractor produced 40 hp. This was raised to 44, then 48 with the introduction of the Fordson Power Major in 1958. The Fordson Super Major was introduced in 1961. This tractor was fitted with a diff lock, position control hydraulics and a horse popwer increase to 52hp. The injection pump was changed to a Minimec in 1962. Tthe New Performance Super Major (called the Ford 5000 Super Major in the US) was intoduced in 1963. This tractor had a horse power of 54hp, modified gear ratios and drop control valve on the hydraulics.

Live PTO became available as an option in late 1957. A raised PTO option and power steering was introduced with the Power Major.

All tractors were built at Fords Dagenham plant in England. Some wer exported on minus wheels etc and final assembly took place in the country of destination. These tractors are refered to as "skid units" when they left the factory. They were being produced at a rate of 350 a day by 1964.

Thank you for the information! I have been looking at purchasing one over the internet so I haven't personally seen it, just pictures. I have about three acres of hilly land that a lawn\garden tractor cannot handle mowing and pushing the snow. I was originally looking at 8Ns or 9Ns. Is there a large physical size difference between the Fordson and the 8N? Or would this tractor be overkill. I'm looking at a Fordson Major diesel.

Thanks again!
Thom

Thom: You will find the Fordson Major to be a larger and more powerful unit than the 8n-9n-2n. If you have lots of smaller spaces to manuever in.. the 8n might be a bit more maneuverable. If you have larger open space, and want to pull a 5 or 6 foot bushhog... do heavier work with a rear blade or other implements,, the Major may be a bit more useful. You may want to consider parts availability if you are going to use your tractor... 9n-8n-2n parts are much more available and more economical than Fordson Major parts.
