dexta rearend and transmission;does anyone know or have an educated guess if a 172 gas engine could be substituted or are the dexta diesel engine internals the same as a 3 cyl.M-f?

I don't know about the gasoline switchout, but the Dexta and Ferguson perkins are exactly the same internally. The only thing to remember is that there are 2 separate Dexta Perkins engines. There is a 144 cubic inch on a regular Dexta and the Super Dexta was a 152 cubic inch Perkins.

The best place to buy Perkins parts is to buy them directly from Perkins Diesel. Perkins is still a major engine and power plant company and the parts are about 1/2 price when compared to a tractor dealer.

If you'll carry your serial number for the engine to Perkins they still manufacture all the engine parts. In fact the 152 CID Perkins is still in wide use today.

If you will use Perkins parts and rebuild the engine right, that Perkins will out live you, if you keep it serviced right.
