Fordson major diesel clanking noise ...

I have an old Fordson major diesel that I inherited recently. It hasen't run for 10 years or so. When I tried to start it there was a loud clanking coming from the timing gear case. I see that it would be easy to remove the cover but how do you remove the crank pulley? What might this clanging mean?

John,

DO NOT TRY TO START THE ENGINE!!!!

It is possible that the three bolts that drive the camshaft have broken and if the camshaft stops in the wrong place, number three con.rod will hit the cam shaft and possibly break it, the block and possibly the crank.

The other possibility is that the metal cover fitted to the pump gear has broken and is flopping around.

It is a simple job to remove the timing cover and this can be done without removing the radiator etc. Just remove the bottom hose. The bottom pulley can be removed by gentle tapping with a soft punch after removing the starting dog. These can be undone by again using a hammer and punch.
Work from underneath.
