Looking at an old Fordson about 1920 vintage I would guess. This Fordson has square tool boxes in the rear fenders instead of the triangular type. i have never seen any Fordson that did not have the triangular style tool box. Would this make it older, or what is the scoop on this.

The 'wide' dash with fender support mounting holes started to appear in the 1922 F. However, the Fordson you are discribing could be an earlier version with a later dash. Changing of the dash was very common. As the steering deteriorated it was easier in some cases to just replace the dash or other piece with something from a spare parts Fordson. Also, it appears that dashes were changed just to accomodate aquired fenders. Good Luck RLL

Jim: The square fender tool box type Model F fenders are pre late 1926. The triangular fenders are commonly referred to as "boattail fenders" were produced only from late 1926 until mid 1927 when the Model F ceased production in the USA at the Rouge Plant in order for tooling to be set up at that plant to produce the Model A vehicle. Boattail fenders were available on late twenties and early 30's Irish built model F tractors. It is interesting to note you have only seen tractors with the boattail fenders, because the boattail fender is not as common.

Just purchased a Fordson and was wondering where the serial # is located. There is a #1530 RR1 on it. Could that be the serial number?

Don,
I know nothing about these models but I have read somewhere that these long wings were to prevent the tractor overturning backwards. Does this sound right?
regards
Brian

Yes Brian... you are correct. Because of the worm drive and gear reduction in the model F tractor.... a lot of torque is produced at the drivers... to the point that if an obstruction was hit while pulling... the tractor easily tried to revolve around itself and come over backwards.
The Model F Fordson was dubbed the 'widow maker' for this reason. It is reported that Mr. Ford, while attending a tractor demonstration in South Dakota... was approached about the problem and, very shortly after that... fenders were made available as an option. The angled bottom of the square tail and boat tail fenders sit flat on the ground at approx 35 degrees angle, and were stout enough to keep the tractor from coming back over on itself.
