I need to know how to set the timming on my 1954 Fordson Major Deisel? I had trouble with the tractor running at a fast idel when it should have been running full speed. After checking everything I could talk to any one about I took my pump in to be re-built. They sent me a rebuilt pump and now it has timming marks but how do I time the engine to it? I know I have a 50/50 chance but will it hurt the engine or the pump if I am wrong. I don't have a manual.

Timing on a 54 is 23deg BTDC. The timing marks could be in one of two places, on the crank pully on early engines, in which case there is a pointer. On later engines its on the flywheel. On the later engines there is a little hole on the flywheel housing (sump half) on the same side as the pump about 1 inch in diameter with a little cover plate held by one small bolt. Remove the cover. If its an early engine, clean the front pully and locate the marks. Turn the engine clockwise from the front untill the timing mark is at 23(I use a large screwdriver on the ring gear through the hole), both valves for no 1 cylinder should be closed, if not, rotate the engine another 360 deg to get no one cyl on compression stroke. Place the injector pump on the engine with the timing mark on the coupling shaft roughly lined up with the pointer on the pump. Bolt the pump in place and then adjust the coupling so that the marks line up exactly. Connect all pipes to the injectors and the filter. Connect the vacume govenor pipes to the manifold. It is important that these are the correct way around. The pipe nearest to the head on the pump goes to the lower hole on the manifold. (If you get these pipes around the wrong way, the engine will surge to almost full revs, then drop till it almost stalls, then rev out again etc)

Bleed the pump and fire it up. Adjust the idleing. If the engine hunts at idle, adjust the damping screw at the front of the govenor until she purrs like a tom cat.

Let us know how you went.
