John:

The creamy hydraulic fluid is indicative of water contamination... the New Performance majors were notorius for leaking water in the differential from two places.. A.The dipstick opening on the front left differential housing by your left foot. B. the vented fill cap at the top rear of the differential cover.

I place a plastic hydraulic hose cap over the vent cap of mine if it has to set outside in the rain. A little rubber washer between the dipstick and the cast housing might prevent some liquid from entering that opening. Best bet is to keep it inside. You will still accumulate some moisture in the differential from condensation.

Yep, water is the culprit here. And yes, Majors are notorious for that. I'd advise replacing the oil in the rear axle, because this is the same oil that the hydraulic system uses. There's a lot of oil in there, and replacing it might you cost you some, but I advise it nonetheless.

Chaps,
Is'nt life strange. We live in England where it is fairly wet. My Major has to live outside all year without a shed or cover. The rear axle oil is as old as the tractor (1952) and has never shown any indication of water. There is no evidence of condensation either. I wouls suspect that it is humidity that is the problem rather than rain.
regards
Brian

Yes, condensation is the culprit. As the housing is cast, this helps cause the problem. Even if shedded. Change oil more often, oil is cheaper than reconditioning back ends.
