Fordson Dexta alternator (generator??) problems

I've had a 1960 Fordson Dexta for about 3 months now. For the last 3 weeks or so, i've been having to jump it off to start it. I assumed it was just a bad battery. The battery looked fairly new, so I thought I would do some checking.
I jumped it off with my truck to get it started, then after removing the cables, I put a meter on the battery terminals. It read 12.5 volts. But while it was idling, I noticed a very slow but steady drop in voltage. (12.49, 12.48...12.4) over a period of about 5 minutes. This shouldn't be happening if the alternator is putting out should it? So then, I idled the tractor up and noticed no change in the decreasing voltage. I removed the positive lead and measured at the lead. No voltage present. What does it sound like? One other question: does anyone have a shift pattern for this tractor? The electrical question in most important.... Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Shift pattern

On the ground speed and pulling is what you're talking about I suppose on the shift pattern.

Low in both shifts
2nd main- low aux
1st main -high aux
3rd main -low aux
2nd main- high aux
3rd main- high aux.

You should have a Lucas 12V Generator and Lucas voltage regulator if it still has factory spec replacement parts on it.

To check the generator take the bat wire off the gen and crank the tractor. Connect the battery tester you have to the batt post on the gen. It should read about 16 Volts and 14 amps @ 1500 RPM's.

If it does'nt read that you need a set of brushes in the gen.

If the gen is making fire check the gaps and points in the regulator or cut-out relay.

Be sure the relay or voltage regulator is grounded good. Sometimes the mounting bolts will work loose or become corroded and it will lose it's ground contact. If it's not grounded the points cannot open and shut right.

Assuming the gen is making fire and the ground on regulator is good,

If you have a Cut-out Relay the points need cleaned and set at 0.020", then set the closing range at 12.7 to 13.3 volts.

If you have a voltage regulator clean the points and set them at 0.015", and your voltage range should be 15.6 to 16 volts.

From my manual the gerbox has 1 to upper right LOW, 2 to lower right LOW, 3 to upper right HIGH, 4 to upper left LOW, 5 to lower right HIGH, and last 6 to upper left HIGH. Reverse is gearbox lower left LOW and high. By the way LOW is shifter towards engine and HIGH is towards driver.
Hope this could be of some help.
