My fuel pump is leaking and I suspect that it is time to change the membrane in the fuel pump. Can
someone give me some advice? like where to get this membrane in Canada or USA and is there thing like little spring and bearing in this pump basicaly what kind of job is it? And also if burrhead is reading this email can you give me the fuel filter number from NAPA or carquest?

I am locate in Quebec Canada.

Thanks to everyone that help me so far!

Jack,
The membrane has nothing to do with diesel leaking. The membrane is controlled by vacuum in the inlet manifold and works the fuel pump rack.
I have just posted the Ford check for testing this membrane below.

He's not talking about the govornor, he's talking about the supply fuel pump.

The diaphram membrane in the supply pump has everything to do with fuel leaking. If it's cracked it can let fuel leak to the inwards direction, or to be and external leak. If the inlet valve is stuck or corroded it can also cause a fuel leak.

If the diaphram stem oil seal is still good it cannot leak oil inwards, but there is no seal to keep the fuel from leaking outwards.

I didn't open that fuel pump yet, but from what I see It leak pretty bad outward. I dont know if it leak inwards. the engine runs like a charme but
I have to turn the fuel tap off everytime I stop using that beast the engine seems to have good fuel pressure. Does it gonna do any arm if I use it like this until I got the membrane also what kind of oil is there in that fuel pompe?

Thanks very much for your time

If you keep a close check on the engine oil it won't hurt anything to run it like that. Just be sure to keep and eye on the oil pressure gage, and if it drops any at all stop and check the oil to be sure fuel is'nt getting into the engine oil. Most times with and outward leak it won't build up enough pressure to force the fuel inwards anyways.

I have one here that I by passed the supply pump because of the leaks and so far it has'nt lacked for power unless I'm bushogging with it.

If you have the manual governor fuel injector pump it should have the the same oil that you use in your engine.

If you have a vacuum govornor it uses the flowing fuel for lubrication.

If your not sure which you have or how to tell just look on the side of the injector pump and if it's manual and uses engine oil you will see "MINNEMEC" on the pump.

If it does'nt say Minnemec on it it will have a vacuum line from the top running over to the intake., and the injector pump will say "SIMMS" and not Minnemec.

The Simms vacuum gov uses the bypassed fuel for lube, and you don't have to add oil.

Oh yeah one more thing. If it's been replaced by a Perkins replacement pump it won't say anything, but there will be a large square headed plug in the top of the pump just forwards of the injector line outlets. It will also have and oil level gage plug 1/2" hex headed on the outter side near the shutdown shaft down below the fuel bleeder plugs, and a drain plug in the bottom 1/2" hex headed.

If it has a Perkins replacement injector pump it lubes with oil no matter which governor box it has.

Burrhead,
Must remeber to engage brain before mouth!!! Sorry Burrhead, did not think and as we have been talking governor diaphrams rather than liftpump ones, I jumped to the wrong conclusion.
Slap my legs.:(

That's what I was sitting here thinking with all the gov talk that's been going on, that you just naturally assumed the gov. I had to go back and read it again because I thought I had misread it myself.

No problems on my end. I think you do and exceptional job of diagnosis and appreciate seeing your post.

Thanks burrhead

I know for sure that it is a simms. How did you bypass your ? did you put another kind of fuel pump or did you use only the gravity as a supply?
I tought it would need the proper fuel pressure to
keep the engine from "wabbling" (sorry I don't know how to spell that word). I have phone a perkins resellers and he ask me what is my pump
part number ???? I didn't found any number on it all it say is it is made in england does he whant my injector pump number???

Thank for all you help burrhead

P.S: no problem Brian I read almost all your posted about the dexta in the archive and I know You know what your talking about.

I don't have a part # for the pump but all the Dexta and Super Dexta both have the same supply pump. He should be able to help you if you tell him its got a Simms pump on a 144 or 152 CID Perkins.

I just used a brass coupling to by-pass mine. It will starve for fuel in heavy use like when bushogging.

You can replace the manual with a electric model if you need the power to mow or something.

The cheap universal from Autozone or somebody like that will supply enough.

It needs 6 to 10 psi supply to be full fuel flow.

I would be glad to. Yessir it's a spring and membrane. The kit from a Massey w/Perkins will fit it too.

If you have a Perkins dealer shop nearby the kit or fuel pump either is about 1/2 price from Perkins rather than Ford or Massey. Here locally the complete fuel pump is around $100 at Ford, a little cheaper at Massey or about $75, and about $50 from Perkins.

Don't forget to drain and change the oil in the injector pump if the membrane is leaking inwards to the pump.
