Brian

I have just recieved some Ford Thames Trader sales brochures, and one of them give another set of horspower figures for "our" engine family. The specs are late 1962, Minimec pump, FL head on the six cylinder only.

4 Cylinder Diesel
Max BHP 70 @ 2500rpm
Max torque 168lbs/ft @ 1600rpm

6 Cylinder Diesel
Max BHP 108 @ 2500rpm
Max torque 253lbs/ft @ 1600rpm

What bugs me though is that the maximum engine speed under load is 2400rpm, and no load is 2700rpm. So under load, this hp cannot be achieved. The 4 cylinder number looks like a salesmans dream, could it be real? I suppose it would be pointless seting up a tractors injector pump up to give these numbers as the working speed is in the range of 14-1600rpm.

BTW, that six cylinder diesel engine on my shed floor sure looks like it wants to have a go in my Super Major. What do you think, should I bow to temptation, or should the "originality god" deliver me from evil? Also how would the live drive clutch cope with a six?

I will have a go at scanning thise brochures in and if they are ok, I will Email you a copy.

Regards
Steven

Steven,
Good information in your article. Thanks.

Its the old problem, what do you need? the ability to pull at low revs or HP. To me HP is the least important. As you see from the figures the HP is up but the torque is down 168 against 171 quoted for the agricultural application. As revs, 2200rpm max, in agriculture, increase, the ability to slog decreases. Ford increased the HP in the 5000 and we ended up with a tractor that on paper was superior to the Major but in work was totaly out shone by it. We had to do a real "snow" job after 1964.
By the way, is that "6" unit you have in your workshop the one that should be in our "Super-Duper Major"? You are some months late in delivery!! You have not got ex-pat Leyland workers working for you down there have you?
I would not use the "6" through a live clutch. This was designed to cope with 40HP and was really stressed at 55hp.

Brian
PS After 30 mins, your E-Mail had only downloaded 20%. Is it the complete manual? :)

Steven,
Got your mail. Very interesting. Something I noted the other day. Parts for minimec pumps are not interchangeable between tractors and trucks because of mods to the delivery elements. This must be something to do with the extra revs to get the HP.

Brian
