Can anyone tell me the purpose of the thin metal pipe which is attached to the front of the fuel tank just above the join in the two halves of the tank. This pipe runs from the tank to the side of the engine block.
Mine has a large (1.5 inch long) hole worn in it from rubbing against the battery. The engine runs fine however I am having trouble filling the tank without half the fuel running out.

Further to the above on FMD Fuel System.
Can anyone tell me how to use the fuel tap so the the fuel reserve works.
As you can probably tell I am trying to overhaul the old girl's fuel system and while checking things out I noticed (under two coats of paint) that the word reserve is printed on the fuel tap handle, unfortunatly half of the handle is broken off. Is there some trick to opening the reserve?
Any other advice on the FMD fuel system greatly accepted.
Paul

The pipe that runs from the cylinder head to the fuel tank is the fuel return pipe, and it does just that, returns the unused fuel from the injectors to the fuel tank.

To activate the reserve, just open the tap fully. Later tractors did not have this feature.

I take it I shouln't be opening the tap all the way when the tank is full.

Thanks again
