FSM Disc Brakes

I told you all I had numerous questions! The brakes on my FSM work very well on one side and almost not at all on the other. I have tried adjusting them but it doesn't help. Before I dig into them I wanted to find out if anyone makes the discs for them? Either the complete unit or just the linings. Do the 5000 discs work and if so what is the difference between the friction disc and the intermediate disc and if you have one of each how are they installed?

Thanks Again
Rich

If you are near any major city (100,000 prox) you should be able to find someone that relines/rebuilds brake shoes and disc pads. It is reasonable and usually better than OE because the good rebuilders rivet the new linings with brass rivets as well as use adhesives. Open up the brakes asap so you have something to work with and be sure to do both sides and check your cables for rust etc... good luck!

I had a similar problem earlier this week. I found that on one side the mechanism had been murdered by a former keeper and on the other the brakes were smothered in oil. My local (in UK) dealer can get the friction plates, but they are expensive. I decised to clean mine up and see how I get on until I can find someone to reline them.
My point is - if they are not working it may not be just plate wear - look out for the oil seal too (it is easy to fit btw).

Chris, My FSM disc brakes have been soaked in oil for years. I am thinking about getting them fixed. How hard is it to change the oil seal?
Thanks, Nellie

It is not hard at all change the oil seals. I just replaced mine. The thing to remember is that when you go to remove the brake housing. That you pull off just the brake housing and leave the bull pinoin alone. If you look straight down at the brake housing and the rear end housing you'll see that there is what looks to be a spacer in beteen them. That "spacer" must stay with the tractor.
