Hello all!
What is the _internal_ difference between a tractor with a raised PTO (with the external gearbox) and the standard lower shaft? I understand that the raised unit also has a different ratio- is this correct? Can the raised unit be added to a standard tractor and what is involved?
What are the chances of finding a raised unit?

I am fascinated by the correspondence so far. My name is Julian Hankinson, once of Norfolk, now of Scotland, but what is to me of import is that you are discussing a tractor I drove in 1957 outside King's Lynn, Norfolk. More of value - at a show yesterday I saw a Fordson Major licenced 1957. Hurrah!

To fit a raised PTO you will need the new PTO unit and the drive shaft that replaces you existing PTO. This job is best done with the rear end jacked up high on stands and then:

Drain the rear end.
Remove the four bolts around the PTO shaft.
Withdraw the PTO shaft from the tractor.
Slide in the raised PTO drive shaft.
Bolt the raised PTO to the tractor.
Refill the the rear end.

Now, a thing to watch, the Raised PTO fitted to the Power Major and Super Major is 540 PTO rpm at 1600 engine RPM (as opposed to 1200rpm on the standard PTO) The raised PTO fitted to the New Performance Super Major (Grey wheel or in the USA, the Ford 5000 Super Major) has modified ratios and the ratio is the same for raised or standard.

The raised PTO is excelent when you are using mowers, you can disengage the mower and still use the HPL. I have a Super Major with the early ratio, and I prefer this as the engine is reving slightly higher and thus more power and faster ground speed when using the drum mower for hay. I would try the tractor wreckers first.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, internally there is no changes to the tractor, only that drive shaft. The ratio change on early raised units is in the raised PTO itself. The later units are 1 to 1. If you get an early unit and fit it to your Power Major, the PTO speed will be the same as before.
