Fordson Power Major Restoration
Sorry this is a re-post. My first attempt did not go to the Fordson Discussion Board - my fault.

I am attempting to restore a Fordson Power Major farm tractor. I know it is a "Power Major", but I can't find the Engine Number. Sitting at operator's seat, looking forward, there is a horizontal machined strip, at the front top RH side of the Engine block, but no numbers have been stamped. Is this where I should find the Engine No. Also, I believe the Power Major's had Serial No.'s from 1481091 to 1583906. Is the Serial No. the same as the Engine No.If not, where do I find the Serial No.

Thanks,

Les Taylor

Les

Your fordson will have been built at Geelong, and the date on the ID tag on the bulk head is a few months off from the engine number date. For some reason, all Aussie tractors have the number near the air cleaner, including Super Majors. I am still trying to determine if the Aussie tractors have their own number scheme. Also, Aussie tractors have those cast wheels that are painted red, not orange.

Steven,

Thanks for your reply. You are psychic. Tonight, I was intending to post a question, re the Paint on my Power Major.
On the "Vehicle Identification Plate", under Paint it has stamped "280 - 4472", and yes my wheels are "red" not "orange". The front wheels are fully cast, with no wheel nuts, and with the wheel being held on by the front wheel bearing retaining nut.
Are you able to confirm that "red" and the "Cast" wheels are "original", and should be retained by me, if I want my "Power Major" to be in original. condition.
Regards,
Les Taylor.

Aussie Fordsons came here as a CKD kit. The wheels were made here in Australia to get the local content up. The back wheels are also unique. Go to your New Holland dealer and buy Fordson Blue for the tractor and Massey Ferguson Red for the wheels.

Hi Les, Did you get the Workshop Manual we sent? You cannot get the correct colour for Fordsons from New Holland now. If you try R.H.Bare & Co and get the early blue, it should be okay. We use MF red for wheels also. Regards, LEO

SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS

Thanks to you all, especially Steven, Rex, Leo and Bob D. I found the Serial No. on the clutch housing near the air cleaner. No. is 1559546. According to previous info, that makes it a mid 1960 tractor. But taking Steven's comment about Australian Serial No.s being a bit out, and my Vehicle Identification Plate having a 61 in the Serial Prefix, I think it is probably a 1961 build. If you are reading this Steven, was Geelong only an assembly plant, with all components manufactured in Dagenham, UK?
Thanks & Regards,
Les Taylor.

Les - Rex is correct - and there should also be a serial number plate on the bulkhead between the battery box and the engine, on the engine side - top middle of the bulkhead.

Bob

Your tractor is a 1960 Dagenham build, 1961 Aussie assembled. remember it had to com here by ship and then wait to be assembled. In those days, cargo ships took about two months to get her if they stopped at every port on the way here it was longer than that. My tractor is a September 1962 Dagenham build, April 1963 Aussie assembeld.

Steven,

That all ties together now. I reckon Engine was made about mid 1960, in Dagenham, and the V I Prefix of 61 seems to indicate a 1961 build at Geelong.

Thanks.

Les Taylor.

I also have a Power Major here (not mine unfortunately) without an engine number on the machined face, RHS near front and under head.
I traced the machine model by using the tractor ID number found near the air cleaner on the top of the clutch housing. Found the year by checking>Link

All>Link the best with the restoration of a great machine.

Cheers
