We just purchased a super major deisel with a
serial number of S090476, can anyone tell me what
year model this is? The number was found on the
right side of engine between rocker cover and
valve cover at #1 cylinder. This tractor does not
have a drop control on the hydrolics, so we know
it is not 1963 or newer. Any help will be great! Thanks, Bill

The number you have quoted is not in the normal series, the S prefix sugests it was a "skid unit", a term Ford used to describe a tractor that was sold in CKD form on a palate with no wheels etc. Where do you live?

We can narrow it down. If it has a vacume govenor it is Oct 1960 to Apr 1962. If it has the mechanical govenor, blue fenders and orange wheels it is may 1962 to june 63.

Steven:
Something to interest - I have just bought a 6 cylinder diesel Fordson major - back end similar to my petrol kero 1955. Reputed to pull like a bought one. Smoking a bit, so I might do a bit of refurbishment over the winter, but should be just the ticket for heavy slashing with a double rotor slasher,
Peter

Have two Emails, I am in England working until the 13 Jan so use "stevbrkr@aol.com" or leave a message on this board an I will check in at a internet cafe. I will come and look at the tractor when I get back. Phone is 54282520.

Just as an aside, I bought one of my trucks up that way and the original engine was replaced by a "huge" Leyland engine. I have a sneaking suspision that the original engine wound up in that tractor.

Merry Xmass.

Thank you for your input. We live in North Carolina, USA. We purchased the tractor at auction, the owner had died 7 years before so little information was available. It does have a vacume govenor. What does CKD stand for by the way? Thank you for your help, Bill

CKD= Completely Knoked Down, a term used for tractors (cars and trucks) that are shiped for final assemby at another plant.
