Super Major Clutch PTO

I recently got this old tractor and have sorted out the brakes, tyyres, engine (more to do though) but I have a problem with the drive to the PTO - the only way I can see to disconnect it is by moving the lever to LHS of gearbox which disengages the hydraulics (everything goes dead). However, I can't re-engage it with the engine running! Am I missing something obvious? Should pushing on the clutch help (it doesn't)?
Any ideas gratefully received - I can't use it without this knowledge because the inertial load of the implement (a topper) does not allow the engine to start!

OK here I am answering my own question - maybe it will help someone later!

The FSM has a two-stage clutch, first part of the stroke disconnects drive from the road gears just like your motor car, second part isolates the hydraulics and PTO.

On my tractor, the second part did not work. So I took up all the adjustment, which did not amoun to a lot, and it still did not work. nThen I fond by trial and error that if I hit the clutch hard and IMMEDIATELY jammed the lever in, it would engage with a nasty crunch. But if I hesitated even for a split second, there was no chance of engaging the PTO drive. I wondered if there might be too much drag due to too heavy an oil - I had put in (in ignorance) 20W50, recommended (for our temperate climate) is 10W30. So I drained the oil and tried again. What a lot of oil lives in that gearbox! The result was dissapointing - no change. So I replaced the oil.

Latest thinking is that the clutch is warped or a bit of friction material is loose or something. Anyway I will have to pull the little darling out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to split the tractor? my facilities amount to a piece of hard ground and a 3-ton hydraulic jack.

Chris

Chris, With the equipment you have I would not advise you to attempt to split the tractor. The tractor is easy to split with the right tools. A clutch can be replaced in a standard tractor in about an hour. I fitted one a month ago in just over the hour with no problem. You need to heave and wriggle the tractor to get the two sets of clutch splines to line up and this is not very safe with what you have. A crane, another tractor with a loader or even a home made support to fit under the rear of the sump, on a pair of wheels to allow you to trundle the two halves appart is the minimum requirement. Do not get long bolts into the holes and drag the two halves together. This can be expensive if the splines are not in line. Just a simple thought, the clutch pedal works in a metal cradle under the footplate. This cradle had a pin across which limited the clutch pedal travel when the PTO clutch was not required. Have you taken the pin out to allow the clutch pedal its full travel?
regards
Brian

on splitting the tractor, lots of time, lots of parts with some very hard to find. Good luck though. Oh, be sure to buy the shop + parts manual from this site. YOu will be glad you did!
