I am restoring a Fordson F, it is an early model without brakes. Question- I live on the side of a hill, is there enough internal friction in the tractor to stop on its own, or will this be "Mr Toads wild ride?"

Thank You for the responses to my question! I double checked my Fordson, it doesn't have brakes. I have located a later rear end assy that has brakes, I just have to go pick it up. I am somewhat hesitent to swap it out as my Fordson has all its original parts. It was bought from the grand-daughter of the original owner which is pretty cool, as she gave me a couple of pictures
of the tractor in use in the twenties. Being that it has a "history" to it, I am going to try to reuse as many of the original parts as possible, even though it will be a fair amount of extra work...

Hi There,
I live in the Netherlands and have a Fordson F myself. This is my opinion:

The normal Fordson F never had any brakes, maybe the industrial ones have. If the tractor is on steel wheels it will press in the soil. If you
depress the clutch the tractor will instantly stop, This also because of the drag in the rearaxle/gearbox. There won't be any problem

The Fordson F wasn't produced with brakes until mid-1923. In most instances you can stop by depressing the clutch but, not always. I too live on a hill and found if your clutch is in good shape you will probably be able to stop. Not always though. Do not, again Do not take the transmission out of gear if you intend to stop using the drag of the worm gear. If you are not sure of the year of your F (can not always rely on eng serial no.), remove the foot rest or pulley and look inside for a brake adjustment. You may be suprised. You can always change the transmission for a later F. If you have a good clutch, make sure you reinstall it. Don't take any chances with an unknown one. Good luck
