How to remove a fordson steering wheel ?

I,ve got a 58 FPM with some broken bulbs in the instrument housing that wraps around the steering column, so i need to remove the steering wheel.

Problem is this seems stuck fast, i've tried soaking it in oil and giving it a light tap with a hammer but it won't shift. I don't want to damage the wheel because its probably the original (it's well worn).

Any ideas ?

Chris

A scrap replacement steering wheel from Richard Pocock of Berwick St John, Shaftesbury, UK shouldnt cost too much. Check his adverts in "Tractor & Machinery" Mag. Out 16th each month.

Thanks for all your comments.

I was concerned that if i hit the steering shaft to hard that i would damage the steering box. I did try a puller but it started to dig into the boss and although i it's only a working tractor, i did not want to damage the wheel. The wheel only has two spokes connected (the third needs a touch with a welder)

many thanks

Chris

Or if your FPM is drivable, loosen the nut a couple of threads then go for a drive around the paddock. Mine came loose after about 10 min driving. I was slashing a small area at the time.

I just recently removed my FMD steering wheel. It came off very easy. I am guessing yours is like mine with a nut holding the splined wheel. You could try a puller on it. If a puller will damage the wheel, then soaking with penetrate and rapping it with a rubber hammer may be your only choice.

If you are really stuck, as I was, a puller is no good, it just deforms the wheel.

It was a real fiddle, but I finally dealt withthe problem as follows:

Remove the steering wheel nut and washers, then take off the fuel tank AND steering box all together. (I said it was a fiddle!)

Get two strong friends to support the whole lot by the steering wheel just clear of a soft surface.

Place a soft drift against the top of the steering coulumn, and clout it smartly several times until the shaft slowly comes out of the wheel.

Catch the tank and steering column before they roll away and get damaged!

Good luck.

loosen the nut & washer, then get someone to pull on the wheel (or use your knees)and use a soft drift & hammer to hit the nut.leaving the nut on helps prevent damaging the thread as well as wearing the wheel when it breaks free

frankly, get a bigger hammer and give the shaft a solid clout (with the Nut on ) it willcome loose and if there is any thread damage clean it up with asuitable die nut.
