JM,
The lever on the hydraulic lift that you are asking about. Is it the lever with a little round knob on close to the casting? If it is, this selects the sensing method of the hydraulics. At the rear of the lift there is a pivot where the third link fits. If the lever is upright, pushing the third link pivot in will cause the lift arms to raise and pulling it out will cause the lift arms to lower. The amount of push/pull on this link is set by the position of the main hydraulic control lever. In the lower position, the lift of the lift arms is controlled by the position of the main lift lever. If you place the lever half way up the quadrant, the arms will raise half way up their travel. If you move the main control lever 1/2" the lift arms will move 1/2". The first position is for soil engaging implements such as ploughs to enable the hydraulics to automatically control the load (draft) on the tractor. It should also be used to tip trailers in this position. The second position is for implements used above the ground such as mowers and for hitching on to implements. If auxiliary services such as tipping trailers are used in this position, loss of hydraulic control can occur. If you have a transmission hand brake, one that works in the gearbox, and you have one that does not work, it is pretty serious as this means it has broken up inside the gearbox. I would not use the tractor until it had been checked out.
regards
Brian
