Can anyone help please

I have been searching on the web to find details of the Fordson major I purchased this week.

I have searched for the serial number on the engine block and can only find two numbers.

First is a small number on the righthand side of the block on the machined area. The number is 137. Its quite difficult to see and I doubt that this has any relevance.

The second number appears to be a casting number F5T which also appears on the gearbox. Both these numbers are on the lefthand side of the tractor.

I also acquired a spare engine and can find no serial numbers on this one either apart from H22V.

Both engines are petrol.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

david

David,
According to the casting codes:

Engine 1: F5T = May 5th 1952.
Gearbox : As above.
Engine 2 : H22V = June 22nd 1954.

On the complete tractor your serial number should be on the flange immediately behind the starter motor.
Your tractor is an early model and one of only 15,000 Spark Ingnition units built that year.
Your serial number should start 1225... for early May.
I own another spark ingnition Major from 1952 so that leaves us only 14,998 left to find ;0)

regards

Brian

Thanks for the information Brian

I have now located the serial number in the place you stated. The engine number for the tractor is 1226321 and the engine number for the spare engine is 1302619.

Any idea of the orginal colour scheme. I wish to restore it to its former glory. Did this model have a name apart from Major.

Also, I am finding it difficult to find a photograph of the same model. Mine has headlamps mounted on top of the radiator grill. Not sure if these are in the orginal position though.

I have never owned a Fordson before and I'm finding it difficult to find information on the web about the Major. Though there appears to be plenty of information about diesals.

Thanks again for your assistance.

regards

david

I will let Brian date your tractor, he has all the numbers on hand.

The head lights should be mounted on the side of the radiator housing, not the top. It will have holes drilled from the factory. The colour is empire blue with orange wheels. Is your tractor a petrol (one fuel tank) or TVO (two fuel tanks). Anyway the official names are Fordson Major E1A. They are further grouped as E1ADN (Petrol), E1ADKN (Kero or TVO) and E1ADDN (Diesel).

I have a 52 fordson major gas also. These seem to be a very rare breed ... lots of diesels around, not many petrol. I got a manual here in Canada from the ford dealer. Ford doesn't have many parts around for this. I would like to rebuild my engine but can't seem to find any parts to do it with. If you find out any info on the engine or kits ... let me know, I'm still looking. Mine is in pretty good shape although I have to repair the fenders to sturdy them up. Lights are on the side of the front. Empire blue with red wheels I believe. Hope this helps
