I'M STILL TRYING TO FIND OUT WHY MY STARTER WON'T FIRE. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO TELL IF THE SWITCH MOUNTED ON TOP OF THE STARTER IS BAD? THIS IS THE SWITCH THAT IS DEPRESSED BY A LEVER AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED ON IN ORDER TO START THE TRACTOR. ALSO,THERE IS A SHORT PIECE OF WIRE THAT IS FASTENED TO THE SWITCH WITH TWO SET SCREWS..WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE WIRE? IF I CAN'T FIND ANOTHER SWITCH..WHAT IS MY ALTERNATIVE?
I AM A NOVICE AT THIS AND NO ONE IN THE AREA HAS ANY MORE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS MATTER THAN I. THE TRACTOR IS A 1962 MODEL FORDSON 08b775757,NUMBER ON THE STARTER IS 26072. THANKS. DON STEPHENS

Hi Don

I have had a similar problem after a strip down, I found that the most important thing to do is clean all of the contacts and tighten them up. The starter takes a huge current to crank the engine over and a relatively small resistance in the connections will render the circuitry useless. I used a wirebrush on a drill and made sure they all shined before they went back together. Hope you manage to solve it.

Bypass that switch with a length of wire having alligator clips upon it's ends. Go from the positive battery post to the small stud in the relay AFTER depressing the starter lever and being certain you are in neutral. If that worked you still must be sure the power is coming out if the ignition switch because the test bypassed the switch. You could take power from the positive post of the relay or battery to supply the starter mounted switch but then anyone could start the rig without the key. That may or may not matter to you. I also like the battery post mount disconnect switches to open the neg. side when you will not use a machine again for a time. Did my other reply help you eliminate other possible trouble sources? If a new starter mounted switch is needed I'd try Ford New Holland first. Where are you situated? Good luck. Bill

Bill,
Just a small correction. Super Majors are positive earth so you would need to take your wire from the NEGATIVE terminal to the stud with the small wire on the solenoid. Otherwise good info. Especially checking you are out of gear.
