FMD rear end fluid

I have the add on 'raised pto'. Should this run full to the top with the rear end oil, or just a bath on the bottom that gets splashed around when it is in use? If it is open to the rear end, I would think it should be full, but sounds dry. I guess my next step is to remove the back plate and see what runs out.

Does anyone know of a place to get a copy of the electrical schematic (online?) to use until I get a manual?

Front to back:

Shaft the clutch linkage moves around,
Behind that a filler port for transmission,
Behind that a dipstick, I am assuming for the transmission fluid,

Behind that is the flange connecting transmission area to the rear end of the tractor,

Behind that is the dash & gear shifting lever.

I see no other place to check an oil level.

I do believe just in front of the left axle it is a sight glass, but it is hard to tell. In front of the right axle, there is a raised flat spot in the casting, but on the left it has a flange like plate with a sight glass looking bubble in the middle of it, bolted on.

Should the rear end oil level be in the middle of the rear axle? That would be the level of this 'bubble'. I plan to part it on a side hill and remove it to see what is going on.

The transmission oil level is marked on the filler.

The plate you mention with a "Bubble" in the centre is the crown wheel "rub" block which mounts through the rear axle housing. This supports the crown wheel from side stress.

I have "E-Mailed" the diagram to your mail address three times. Twice it has come back as too large for your server and once not acceptable.
Have tried again tonight.

I took the filler cap off (about 5/8" nut on cap) and removed. The opening is large, about 2" dia. There was no dipstick on cap and I don't see any graduations of any kind inside opening. The outside is deeply covered with oil so maybe they are there.

The oil level I could barely see way down at the bottom, underneath the 'linkage' that I see inside the filler opening. I am a little concerned that it is way low. I've seen postings that warn if transmission fluid is low and rear end fluid is high that the seal is leaking and you need to break tractor. Hope this isn't the case. There is what looks to be a brass plumbing valve to the bottom right of pto that makes me think someone had the problem and rather than fix it, made it easy to dump oil out of rear end and put back into transmission area.

I did purchase an owner's manual today, but will take time to receive.

If you suffer from oil transfer from gearbox to rear axle and do not want the bother of a major repair, just take it from one and put it in the other. There is little need to worry about damaging anything on the light duties you are going to do. The oil will stop transfering when the levels equalise anyway so the gearbox will never run dry. Keep you eye on the levels and you should have years of life and enjoyment in your Major.
