Thanks to help from this group, I found out I have a 'common' problem of seal between transmission and rear end leaking. It goes across pretty fast and must have been this way a long time as someone has installed a plumbing valve at the bottom right of pto I am assuming for draing oil to transfer back.

Brian in this group has told me that for minimal use, I can continue to do this for a long time with no problems. I plan to mow some and at most maybe plow a 5 acre field this fall. Possibly drive it 7 miles to a friends house to mow too.

My question is: Is there a level where I can hurt things? I am guessing before I use it hard or drive long distances down the road I should fill transmission up. I am also guessing that since hydraulics run off sump in bottom that a high level in the rear end won't hurt anything.

Is the level in the transmission where it stops transferring over adequate for mowing around the yard for an hour or so in 1st gear or should I transfer oil before I use it each time? I am guessing that it is acceptable to use without transferring.

Am I on the right track?

I plan to split tractor this winter and fix it, but don't want to make anything worse before then. (I will be asking for tips on this when the time gets closer).

On the brighter side of things. It runs great and works well, loving every minute of it. I thoroughly enjoy the diesel smell coming off it. Running out of jobs to do with it..... .Might actually have to get to the jobs the wife wants done! I live in SW Wisconsin and we have gone 23 days without measureable rain, keeping the grass from growing. I used to hate mowing.


By the way, what is the seal like that is leaking? Is it a round shaft seal around the shaft going back to pto/hydraulic pump that is leaking?

Hi

I would check it before mowing and plowing
The high level in the rear wont hurt anything
it never rises up to the brake shaft seals
BTW you could replace the lower pto dive seal
between trans and rear end thirst before splitting the tractor. That can be replaced very easy, just drain the oil of tranny and rear end and take the pto drive box under the tranny of
(where the pto lever enters the tranny)
That way the oil never lowers below the upper seal
(wich might be ok, you can't tell now)
I fixed a couple of them and in most casses the lower pto seal was the problem

Thanks for the info. I didn't know about changing the lower seal. Sounds like it is worth a try. The oil is transferring over very quickly, I am thinking it may be leaking in both places.....

Bruce,
Removing and replacing the lower PTO housing is not a bad job. Replacing the seals is another thing. It is not easy to get the double lipped seal onto the shaft without damage. Then you have done the whole job for nothing.

If you have the special tools or can make something to slide the seal up onto the shaft and drive it into place with a drift that pushes on the whole seal outer rim then OK.

Might be an idea to try your CNH dealer and see if he can fit the seals into the PTO housing for you. (After you have removed it).

That does sound like good advice. I (like most people) don't enjoy performing a lot of work for no reward! My neighbor is going to help me re-wire it in the next couple of weeks, then when time permits I hope to dive into the seals you mentioned. Wish me luck. Thanks for all your help. I do now have the operators manual and the Repair Operations manual. I see some of the original questions I was asking are pretty obvious when you have these. Thanks again.

No problem!! Ask away!! I always tell my students that there is no such thing as a dumb question. The others may all be wondering the same thing but are too scared to ask. Have you read the last "Memories of a Field Service Engineer" in the Article Archives on this site. There is a true story about wiring a combine harvester here. I know !! I was that engineer.
