At low rpm and low gear i can hear noise from the gearbox of my 56 Major.
Is it normal or should i be worried about it?There are now signs of metallpieces or splinters in the oil.
greetings from Austria
Tom

Yes, you should be worried. I can't tell what's wrong with it (could be dozens of things) but something seems wrong with it for sure.

I'd stop using the tractor and have it repaired first. Otherwise you might end up with a wrecked gearbox.

Tom,
It depends what sort of noise it is and when it became noticable.
If it is a "clatter" it could just be movement between the gear teeth through age. Remember this gearbox has no syncromesh and when you select a gear you do move large gears into mesh with one another.
If it is a "whine" this again is pretty normal with age.
If it is a "rumble" and has come on suddenly or over a short period of use then it is most likely a bearing and will need urgent attention.
The other area of problems that can cause noise and metal in the oil is the transmission hand brake. If you have been using this to stop the tractor or have driven around with it on, then you may have caused it to break up.
It is not a bad job to split the tractor and remove the gearbox unit but must be done with care so you are safe when working on large bits of heavy metal.
regards
Brian
