I've recently bought a Power Major which has been lying unused for a long time (several years). It ceased being used after it developed serious wear in the splined joint between the l/h steering arm & the top of the king pin. I intend replacing both these parts with second-hand bits to solve this problem. Were there any changes in design or specification of these parts during the production run of the FMD ? I can't date my tractor at present as it came with no documents. All I can say is that it carries FPM badges & the exhaust pipe exits up through the bonnet rather than up beside it. Does this indicate its age ? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Jon,

The exhaust through the bonnet indicates that your tractor was once fitted with a front loader. The exhast elbow was changed to get clearance for the loader arms.

This would also be the cause of wear in the king pins and steering brackets although this was fairly common. There were no modifications to these over the period 1952 to 1964 other than a strenghthening web added for power steering.

Your serial number should be under no.1 injector.

regards
Brian
