Dexta, hard to get in reverse.

Hello All. I have a 59 Dexta. Runs like a top with the exception of shifting into reverse. When shifting into reverse (both high and low) most of the time you let out the clutch and the tractor will go forward. The way to get it into reverse is to kind of double clutch. That is to say, shift half way into second, let the clutch out and then back in again, and then shift into reverse. Works just about every time. Anyone have any experience in this area? I was going to dis-assemble, but I am afraid I wont be able to get any parts. Besides that I wouldn't know what to look for. Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the info everyone. Hey Stephan. After reading your comments I removed the gear shift. The end is not round at all. Actually it is the shape of a distorted hammer head. I don't soppose you or any else knows what the dimensions should be??

Nope! I have never seen one that wasn't welded.
You could measure the u shaped shifter forks to make sure that the hammer head only moves one fork whem moving back or forward.
Cant see any large enough pics in the shop manual to see what shape it should be original. Did the forks look oke to you?

I have a To-35 and it is sometimes hard to get into gear until my grandpa showed me that you should let out on the clutch a little while putting it into gear. maybe just my tractor but give it a try if you haven't already.

my 2 cents

Ben

Hello

Thats a strange problem you have there...
Hm let me think....most dexta's have had problems
with the shifter were the stick conects with the gear forks cosing the shifter to get stuck in a gear. Most of them have been repared by welding the outer end of the gearstick so that the ball at the end is back to the original dimensions. It could be that this has been done to your dexta and the ball is welded to big and broke of a piece of the gearfork at the frond so that when you shift in to reverse it slips into 2nd or 5th gear. If this is the case you should be able to shift in reverse by forcing the stick to the left when you shift.
Take of the stick plate (foor bolds on top of tranny)and see if there's anything wrong with the stick end or the gear forks. it should look like this: [o] the o being the ball at the end of the stick and the brackets the gearforks. One of them might be missing a piece. You could try to weld it up (dont know if the forks are weldable)
Good luck and let us know how it turned out

Stephan

This is a tough one; I don't have an answer to this. Brian, you got any advice here?
