Lub Capacities on 1923 Model F

I just purchased a "creampuff" Model F, even had original tools. However, I'm still gathering data and manuals. In meantime, can anyone tell me what the quantity (quarts) of engine and transmission oils are? I want to get that going right away before doing any cranking. I assume non-detergent 30 wt engine oil is fine.

Thanks,

Machineryman

I just looked in myFordson Book. The crankcase holds 2 1/4 gal. transmision 3 3/4 gal. cooling12 gal.. Lately i have been getting the few parts that I need from Duane L. Helman, He is a little high but not out of line and he is full of much needed information. He has Rosewood Machine&tool in Ohio Ph# 937 362 3871. THe best time to get hold of him is in the late afternoon the are nice people to talk to, it nice to hear of more people getting the fordson`s back into the public.

Good to hear about another Fordson coming back to life! It's interesting to read your questions and replies and to be able here other people's ideas. Thanks!

an serpentine accessory drive belt from a cummins engine ( i don't recall the part # off the top of my head) makes a good fan belt. If i think of it tommorow i will get the gates part number and mail it to you. I use a detergent 15W-40 diesel rated oil in my fordsons. if you have a clean crankcase dont use a non detergent oil.

Thanks for the responses.

Another question that has come up is, where do I find a fan belt? Mine has disintegrated, and I can't find anyone in the usual list of antique tractor parts suppliers who has Fordsen Modle F parts. Any help appreciated.

Bob

The reprinted copy of the Fordson manual I have says to use 60 wt. (yes, sixty weight) oil in the engine. Of course it also says to build a fire under the engine in the winter to warm the oil enough so it will flow at startup. I run 40 wt. oil in my '23 model F because it is as heavy as I can get locally.

The transmission doesn't hold as much as you might think. The sump begins just ahead of the gear shift lever and I vaguely recall adding only about two to three gallons to it.

Another fluid level to check is the water level in the air filter. It is called the "Air Washer" in the manual. If the water level is too low, a float in the chamber closes off air to the carb and vaporizer. This essentially 'chokes' the engine and it will not run.

If I`m not mistaken It holds 2 galons of oil there is two pet cocks ( my wife loves that Name)on the left side of the motor on the oil pan if oil don`t come out the bottom you need to add some, if it comes out the top it is full. I just got My 1923 running this summer after A four year fix up project.
