Fordson Major Diesel Oil Filter Conversion?

Finally got around to changing the oil on the 'new' Fordson tonight, excited to finally get to it. I had seen postings here with problem leaking so I was very careful, removed the old rubber gasket, coated the new one with oil, put it in carefully, put the cartridge on. All went well until I started it. I have never had an oil filter leak until now. Even after tightening beyond what I wanted to do, it still emits a nice solid stream of oil. I looked back at some of the old postings but couldn't find a conversion.

Does anyone know of a conversion to spin on available in the US? (Napa, United Auto etc.) I feel as if I have been beaten in the fight, but I refuse to lose the war!

Would it have helped to use petroleum jelly on rubber gasket instead of oil? I didn't dig further to see if there were 2 gaskets stacked by the last person, but have a hard time imagining it since it wasn't leaking a bit before I changed it.

Thanks again in advance

Bruce,

Had the same result when I first changed the oil in my Super Dexta. I had to try a couple of times to get the gasket to sit just right, and then it stopped leaking completely. I think in my case the case of the oil filter was fouling on something else rather than pulling up tight on the gasket, or else the gasket had moved a little bit leaving a part of the rim of the case not touching it. The spin-on is one way to go, but if you haven't already, dismantle it and try to refit it being verrry careful get the case to go up just right. (I found it helpful to get a third hand to hold it in place while I located and tightened the stud.

On the spin ons, I think I saw in a post by Burrhead some time ago on this board he gave some Napa numbers - he may be able to help with that.

Thanks for the encouragement. I went ahead and did what you suggested. Took it off again, making a complete mess. Cleaned all parts. This time instead of putting oil on the gasket, I put a thin film of grease. I think the key is what you said, I was very careful to keep things lined up, spinning it often as I tightened the bolt, and it worked. I think a second person would make it much easier.

Back up and running.

Thanks

Bruce
