Brian, I have been corresponding with Oscar who tells me you a something of an expert. I have a performance super dexta (1964) with an oil leak on both sides where the brake cross shaft exits the gearbox. Oscar tells me that the oil seals can be replaced from the outside. Is the job of pulling off the linkage to the brake, sliding out the cross shaft, and replacing the seals as simple as it sounds ? Or when the shaft comes out will something go clunk (!) and drop into the gearbox ? Doesn't the shaft run in some sort of bearing along its length ? Any words of wisdom and advice before I start a job that if it went wrong would need the gearbox 'opened up' would be most welcome ? Thanks. Richard

Richard,

If done carefully you should have no problems and need only to remove the linkage to get at the seal. These are never really tight and can be prised out with a screwdriver. The shaft runs in plain bush bearings at each side and there is nothing on it that can drop in the box. However if you take it out you will loose your gear oil so drain this first. It is usually a pretty simple job though.

regards

Brian
