In Fordson Major Diesel there are two metal plates on the wall between the battery and the engine. The smaller one has the serial number on it, but what is in the bigger plate? Mine is covered with blue paint.

TH,

Have checked the plate. I have one on my Major but had not noticed it. No that's wrong. Just overlooked it. Case of familiarity and it takes a question like yours to make us stop and rethink things.

On some Majors there are three plates in this area. One that says: Fordson Major, and a small one with the serial number.

The plate you refer to gives the oil specs. for engine, gear box and rear axle. It then includes the cold start sequence for which ever tractor you have. Mine being petrol/kerosine, it explains the settings for mainfold baffle, fuel tap, choke and throttle positions, radiator shutters etc. The wording is exactly the same as the tractor hand book. The diesel plate explains how to use the decompressor, cold start etc. again exactly as the hand book details it.

Thanks again for making me look twice. It will also remind others that even if they have no hand book, Fordson tractors have all the basic information there on the tractor. (At least the earlier versions have).

regards

Brian

I have the smaller plate visible and it has the same text as in your Dexta.
Does anyone know what is in the big plate?

Hmmm, doesn't ring a bell. But I haven't peeked into the innards of a Major recently so I can't say for sure if all Majors have it or what the plate says. Be sure to let us know what's on it once you find out!

Have just been out in the rain and checked my 1952 Major. On mine the plate is plain with no markings except for the serial No. stamped along the bottom. I have a sneaking suspision that in later years the plate was marked "Fordson Major" above the serial number.

Nobody seems to have a clue what plate I'm talking about. At least in my Major (1955) there are two plates in the wall between the engine and the battery. In the smaller plate there is a text similar to that Peter Tatham mentioned earlier. After the text there is the serial number stamped on the plate.

But what is in the bigger plate? I decided to find out myself. I used a sand blaster to strip the paint off from the plate. I knew that the possible writings under the paint could be damaged, but I didn't know any other way to do it. I discovered that there is writing in that plate. Unfortunately it was sligthly damaged as I predicted but part of the text is visible. There is some technical data (firing order etc.) and starting instructions in it. If anyone has the complete text could you post it here, please?

Thank you all for your answers. TH.

TH,

Now I know what plate you are talking about. A large plate at about the level of the injectors. It was fitted to the early Diesels and did in fact spell out the starting proceedure. It got deleted from the tractor around the same time as the decompressor because (from what I can remember) it described how to use this item. Will check up and see what can be found.

regards

Brian
