The refurbishment continues. My 1964 performance super dexta's proofmeter does not work ! Where should I start ? I notice the front end of the proofmeter cable screws into the rear of the fuel injection pump - as a start can I disconnect it to check it out without any alarming consequences ? Presumably the oil will need to be drained from it. How can the proofmeter tell me all the things the manual says it can by being only connected to the fuel injection system ? Does anyone know and can anyone help please ? Richard

Richard, Your proofmeter is driven by an inner cable, running within an outer sheath by a shaft on the fuel pump which revolves in proportion to the engine speed. To check the inner cable unscrew it from both ends. No oil should leak out. You will likely find that one, or both, of the squared drive ends has broken and a new cable is required. If the cable is OK then the meter it's self is obviously suspect. For cable or meter repair/replacement contact Richfield Speedograph Ltd, Rolleston Drive, Arnold, Nottingham U.K. NG5 7JR. Tel 0115 9264235. who should be able to assist you.
Hope this helps,
Peter.

Peter gave good tips! Apart from the cable ends being broken you could also encounter worn-out holes in either (or both) the fuel pump and the proofmeter holes where the cable ends are stuck into. If these holes are round instead of square, a new cable isn't going to help. In that case I'd advise cleaning the holes thoroughly of oil and grease inside and out and then filling them carefully with polyester. Stick the cable ends into the still wet polyester to create the square holes, then remove and let dry (do not leave cable inserted when drying because you need to be able to remove the cable when doing work on the tractor). Please be very careful not to get polyester into the proofmeter or fuel pump innards!! Also make sure beforehand that oil or grease will not dissolve the polyester!

Good luck!
