Oil Bath Air Cleaner causes loss of power?

I have a '56 Major Diesel. When I bought it last year, it had an old, dry paper air filer on the intake. I acquired an original used oil bath air cleaner & installed it the other day. The tractor now loses power & won't rev up past what seems like half the rpm's it had with the paper element. The injection pump timing is on the money. When I remove the oil bath intake hose, the tractor runs great on fresh air. Could the oil bath element be clogged inside? I cleaned it the best I could, but it does not come out of the cannister on this early type. Any suggestions?

You may have to adjust the high speed stop screw on the intake manifold. The previous owner may have screwed it in to compensate for the reduced intake vacuum with the paper filter. With the original filter it will not let the engine wind up as it should. I think the no-load speed is supposed to be around 1925RPM.

Mike,
Be a little carefull when changeing air cleaners around on FMD's and Power Majors. These tractors had a vacuum govened injection pump. They relied on the drag through the oil bath air cleaner to control the engine speed. If you do not get enough suction to operate the pump you may find out what the rods and pistons look like. Through the side of the engine. It might be better to cut through the mesh retainer and remove the wire mesh for cleaning. Then replace the mesh and solder or braze the retainer. Mind you, they really rev when you remove the air cleaner pipe at the manifold! A local fitter once claimed he got 30mph out of a major with no air cleaner fitted.

I had the same problem. I took my air cleaner off and put a dry cleaner on it, that fixed it up.
