I have a 1958 New Fordson Major Diesel. And there is a lever on the rocker panel up front near the radiator. Does anyone know what this does? Or what it is? I got the Fordson Major repair book and it doesn't show anything about it. You can see what it looks like on my website link below.

the decompression lever works well for setting the timing but it is actually intended for cold weather starting. upon start up you rais the lever up and it opens the valves, you then reach over engage the starter and you slowly push the lever down, if all goes well it will start.

we have started our 55 major here in Minnesota at -30 F degrees below 0 with out having the block heater plugged in. you do need a good battery for that.

ADAM, was the temperature really -30 F (-34.4 Celcius) or was it 30 F (-1.1 Celcius, which is just below the freezing point of water)?
The reason I ask this is that I'm curious of knowing is the Fordson Major capable of starting in such cold temperatures (-30 F).

In Saskatchewan, Canada we can see -40C or -40F (they are the same at -40) and my 62 FSM starts without any problems at that temp. It takes some serious battery power though, they have to be in good shape. I have never needed the decompression lever either. It will also start much faster if I plug in the inline water heater for a couple of hours first.

It was -30 degrees below zero, it was cold!!!
if i remember right my mother got her car stuck in the driveway one evening and we had to get her pulled out, we did not have a four wheel drive truck at the time so we tried to start the major, and it started. that was about ten years ago. we replaced the 55 major with a 60 major and the newer major is not as good as the 55 for cold weather starting, it has to be plugged in to start. if you have a good battery, good injectors the majors will start. actually the Fordson Major is billed as the first sucessful practical diesel, it could be started in cold weather.

Thanks for the response, ADAM. I recently got a FMD -55 and it must be repaired before I can drive it so I don't know about its capabilities yet. My dad says that it won't start in cold weather but now I'll know. Of course there are differences between tractors, like your 55 and 60. I hope mine is in good condition.

No problem with this one.
It's the decompressor lever that allows you to turn the engine over with out compression.
Useful for setting up the timing etc.

P.S. My tractor has this but wasn't working originally as the drive dogs on the end of the lever had sheared off. I cured it by bulding up with weld and fileing back to shape. Works fine now !

Should the lever be up or down? How does this work? What is required to do to make it work? Thanks, I appreciate all your help, Jim

With the deco-lever in upper position the outletvalves are opened and you can easily turn the engine.
In lower position the decompressor is disengaged.
