I have a '58 Fordson Major diesel that I'd like to continue using in the cold MN winters. Anyone got any tips for starting the tractor when the temperature dips below freezing and beyond?

I start my 63 diesel dexta by simply removing the heater plug, then direct the flame of a blow lamp up the plug orifice and press the starter. She will fire up almost immediately and then pop the plug back in before the revs get too high....simple

A block heater on older diesels is the best way to go.

Frank, just go to NAPA and buy a water heater that you can plumb into the water system and plug it in a few hours before you want to start it. Thats what us truckers have been doing for ages.

I have heard hair dryers can warm an engine sufficiently. Stick a hair dryer in the air filter housing dont wedge it in tight or air cant escape and the dryer will burn out. naturally be careful of electricity, water, breakage etc as they are not designed for outside/workshop use, i am trying to get hold of a 12v travel hair dryer, not as good but will run off tractors battery and safe.

Frank, Also look back further than Bruce suggests to a post "Decompressor". I posted some quotes from the Fordson handbook and the workshop manual.

regards

Brian

You might want to check out the posting on page 2 of this forum that has the subject 'LEVER'. I found it interesting as to how it works to start the tractor in cold weather.

When we were on a dairy farm in upstate New York and had to use a diesel tractor in the winter,we installed a block heater in the water system, either in a soft plug or radiator hose. That saved a lot of strain on the starter and engine.

My experience with larger HP tractors (150 +)
in the dead of winter, TX-OK panhandle. Two 4640s
one on a tub grinder the other a loadertractor.
we would change oil from 30wt. to 20wt. As long
as the weather was cold we sometime thined the DSL with Power Service. This and useing the blockheater we could start our tractors on most any morning. Both tractors sat outside not inside.
With thined fuel we didnt do any farming work, but
did usual chores,load&grind hay,string & rollup
electric fence, pull folks out who get stuck in the
mud snow,ect. Good Luck!!!!!
