I am working to replace the double lipped seal on the lower hydraulic pump drive assembly (beneath the transmission). I removed the side plate to get the last bolt out, unit came loose. Unfortunately it won't slide forward, it catches up above. Do I need to remove the front cover plate and disconnect some shaft/gears? or do I wedge it forward and down until it pops free? Looking to not cause myself further problems. Thanks in advance for any tips.

just checked my shop manual and only steps listed are;
drain oil and remove pto shaft.

remove linkage and shift cover.

remove bolts snd lower gear box

I removed lots of these in my days as Ford tractor mechanic and seem to remember each one was a struggle , good luck.

Thanks. I should have guessed to removed the pto shaft. The dealer yesterday gave me the same hint. Unfortunately, when I went home last night armed and ready to complete the job I found the 'raised' or 'above' PTO option on my tractor was more complicated than I had guessed. Any experience with removing them? I Got the housing off the back end, instead of seeing a normal pto shaft exposed, there is a nut holding on some bearings etc. There is a plate/ring around the outside with 4 - about 1/8" holes, that I am wondering if that is a threaded ring that I use a punch to spin off and then it will let the bearings and shaft slide rearward? ???

Thanks for the reply and the help. I am getting a little frustrated with the project and am looking forward to just driving it again!

checked the shop manual (I never saw a raised PTO in our part of the Country) I will give u the instructions in manual;

1. drain oil
2. press down on operating lever and remove the retaining nut,lift out the operating lever,to dismantle,release circlip and remove spring and seat.
3.unscrew the 4 retaining bolts and remove the master guard and shaft cover.
4. unsrew the 2 lower bolts containing the raised PTO to the rear of the housing.nextunsrew the 2 upper retaining bolts which pass thru theraised PTO housing, BUT do not remove the right hand bolt! the left hand bolt locates thru the tubular idler gear shaft.the right hand bolt forms the selector shaft , and if removed during this operation,will release the selector fork ball and spring. Lift the assembly away from the transmission housing.

To remove the raised PTO extention shaft grasp shaft andpull it out from the rear transmission housing.

END of Quote from shop manual

since u allready seem to have the housing off it seems like you should be able to pull the shaft out at this point.
good luck

That was really helpful (assuming pulling on it works). You are exactly right, I have all the steps done, and surprisingly, I didn't remove the bolt completely as it suggested. It looked like it would present further problems (things with springs worry me). If this works, you have saved me considerable grief as my next step was to break the nut free and start dismantling everything off the shaft.

What part of the country are you in (I'm in WI-USA)? I am at a bit of a disadvantage, although FMD's are in this area, I don't know of anyone with one. I have never seen another one except in pictures. The raised PTO is a handy thing, didn't even know I had it when I bought the tractor last summer!

Might I ask what the exact title of the manual you have is? I have reproductions of 'Instruction Book' (operator's manual), and 'Repair Operations', which I thought might be the service manual. It has great exploded view pictures showing the parts, but no text telling how to do it. I think it is more geared to estimating the time and costs of the repairs.

Once again I thank you for the time you took to look up the information and type it in.

Regards,
Bruce

your welcome , hope it works for you , I would try a slide hammer type of puller.

I am in Alberta Canada ,so these tractors were quite common here.

The manual I refered to is the factory service manual, called "The New Fordson Major Repair Manual"

Since these are probably hard to get i would try to get a "I and T Shop Manual"
These are readily availabil in Canada, for almost any make
I have 52 Major myself, use it mostly too run my DC welder now, used to do all my field work at one time. Great tractors!
