I have a rattling noise comming the Simms injector pump, sounds sort of tinny, on my 58 FMD. Since I have got it recently I dont know if its a "bad thing" or a "dont worry about it thing". Any ideas or input on what this might be would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim S.

Thanks to both Brian and Lindsay for thier advice and input. When I bought the FMD in late fall, the tinny sound wasent there. So this will not harm the tractor just to leave it, other then to annoy me? Thanks, Jim S.

Jim,
I would tighten it as I described. If you leave it wear will increase and cause the coupling to fail.

regards

Brian

Your rattle is most likely the fibre drive coupling. These get loose and wear. To tighten, slaken off the clamp bolt on the front half of the pump drive and lever the coupling towards the pump. Retighten the clamp bolt.

regards Brian.

Dont worry about it.
It is perfectly normal. What causes it is the 20,000 Pounds Per Squar Inch (Give or take a bit) in the fuel injector lines and the pump. It should be most noticable at idle. Put your finger on one of the injector lines if you want to feel that rattle. What causes the line to vibrate is the line auctally expanding and contracting with the pressure. Keep in mind that the hole in the line is about the size of a sewing pin so that give`s you an indacation how thick the walls of the lines are and how much pressure is in them.
Hope this helps
Lindsay
Ps people please dont flame me if I got the pressure wrong I am just repeating what my dad told me it should be. But I would like to know if I am wrong and if so what the real pressure is.

Lindsay,

Your'e a few lbs per sq in out in your figures. The crack off pressure for the injectors is given as 185 atu. Multiply this by 14.7 and you get 2719.5 lbs per sq in so you have an extra 0 in some where.

If you can feel pressure pulses in the injector lines it is usually a blocked injector. Normally you can feel one pulsing more than the others. I always use this "feel" method to find a faulty injector on any diesel. Bit like a doctor taking your pulse.
regards

Brian
PS No "flame out" intended.
