I recently overhauled my 1962 Fordson Dexta with the 144 perkins diesel and I put new brass gaskets on the plates that cover the combustion chambers of my fuel injectors, and they are leaking badly. (These are the sorta of triangular covers with 3 bolts that hold them on to the head, and when you take them off you can see the injector tips.) Does anybody know what I can do about this?
Thanks Mark

Mark I am sure Sean is a very good automotive machinist, My Dad was one before he retired with 35 years at Amoco Oil in Texas City Texas. And that is what I am sure he learned in school. And in alot of ways he is right, However we are talking about your 1962 Fordson DIESEL!! Burrhead is right the silicone will not get hard and will blowout. Since the Fordson was overhauled. The first time you tryed to seal it what happen, with the nice finish on the plate etc you were trying to seal? And I would not think of the paint as a patch, Just another way to solve a problem. Good Luck Mark

Burrhead has the right answer for you that should work great. I even put 2 gaskets on before once the gasket gets hot tighten it again.

sir, i am an automotive machinist,i notice that people are recommending patch ups as a way of repairing your problem, the only real way to get a gasket to seal is to have a nice finish on the plate etc you are trying to seal, you mention a complete overhaul... as im sure you are aware, when a overhaul is carried out, all the extra power produced, water flowing properly, etc, puts more pressure on the cooling system, hence your leak... all gaskets, copper or otherwise should be sealed with a 'high temp' silicone. i can assure you that any other means will give you grief in the future, good luck. sean case

Mr automotive machine man it don't really make any difference if you are the Queen of Sheeba or just one of us commoners. The high temp silicone is still just another form of patch job.

The high temp silicone will not hold up to the 400-450 psi compression, but the aluminum paint will last forever.

You can soften the gaskets by heating and then quenching them in water. Re install, tap the covers with a lead hammer, then retighten. Good Luck: Mike

Thanks Mike, but I tried that only I didn't hit them with the hammer. If the new ones don't seal I will try this.
Thanks
Mark

I never had that prob to that degree, but when I've had them leak here's how I do it.

I would take the covers off and reclean the mating surfaces and gasket real good. Then apply aluminum paint fairly heavy to the cover, the brass gasket and head.

Let the paint dry til it gets dried down to being just tacky to the finger touch.

Now put the covers back on and tighten down. Now take a wooden block and 2# hammer. Place the wood block against the cover and wham the block as hard as you can. It won't hurt the cover but it will flatten the brass. Now retighten the cover.

Leave the engine set over night before cranking.

Thanks Burrhead I will try this. I have been trying to get this to stop for 2 days now. I ordered 3 new copper gaskets today, because each one had a little nick it, like it can from the factory this way. It will take a week to get them and I will try this. I got your email address from a question someone else asked you and I emailed you but you may have not gotten it. I do thank you for your timely answer. It's good to know you gentlemen are out there. Thanks again
