Our gun club has a 1954 Major Diesel. What size or series battery should it have? The 12 volt battery in it looks too small. Apparently five years or so ago someone put an aftermarket alternator on it. No one knows anything about it; I don't think the oil was even changed before I got into the club. No one remembers when the battery was replaced.

It probably came with one huge 12 volt that had 130 plates. However the better retrofit is to use two six volts in series. Your New Holland dealer will know this as will NAPA. Many people just use what works. I have a '53 that works well with a car battery. If you have trouble starting it in cold weather, use the compression release or email me and I will tell you how to install a block heater.

If you have any other "Major" problems let me know.

I have read old posts that said 130 AMP HOUR battery or something like that. A truck battery is what I use in my power major. It doesnt really matter as long as the battery is heavy and supports a very large starting current.
But if the battery in it is starting it then you dont need to change it. Only change it if the battery in it is not satisfactory. If it ain`t broke don`t fix it.
Hope this helps
Neil
