What type of oil does the rearend, 3-point, and tranny take. Just bought one and need to change it, full of water. Don't feel like waiting for the manual to get here.

J., wife is a NH parts person, she says NH recommends 134d fluid in all three. I'm in the middle of a rebuild/restoration of a 64 Ford 5000 Super Major, luck with yours

John

you say use only 1 type oil in the super major for all 3 where are the 3 places to put in. 1 on top of rearend housing -1 on the side in front of pto lever -where is the other place to put the oil? you don't use the same oil in the engine do you ?

Ford's original idea was to use 30 weight HD (high detergent) motor oil everywhere.

I also had an old Euclid / Tyrex BullDozer. It used 20 weight motor oil in all it's hydraulics. More than 50 gallons worth!

The advantage of any HD motor oil is that it does not foam too much and is also brand switchable...(Mobile, Shell, Chevron, Tidewater etc). Other lubricants and hydraulic fluids are not so versitle.

My Manual (IT Shop Services) says:

"Models "FSM" and "New FSM"

"The rear axle differential and final drive lubricant is utilized for the hydraulic system fluid. Capacity is 10.8 gallons. Lubricant from the factory is S.A.E. 30 H.D. oil. [motor oil]...

HOWEVER, S.A.E. 80 Mild E.P. ...can be used on a complete change. ...Do NOT mix Gear Lubricant with S.A.E. 30 H.D. oil...."

My tractor Dealer suggests using normal 30 weight HD motor oil. (30 weight Detergent motor oil).

Clean the pump screen when you drain the oil!

Well that doesnt help me much. I have no idea what 134d is. Is it 80W/90, Hytran, 20W/30, etc.

J, sorry about that, I shoulda told ya what 134d was. Its the NH trans/ hyd fliud, its blended to replace all hyd, trans, & rearend fluids in all models. There several reasons they do this, its better oil, than earlier types, also if you have several tractors that have remote cyd cop. you would tend to mix fluids from all the tractors as you switched imp. betteen them. Also its easier for the dealers to just stock one type of hyd oil. I hope this helps answer your ?.
Good Luck & do post a picture so be can see your "girl" John
