My original starter needed replacing. A rebuilt one was going to cost me >$250. This is a work tractor so originality is no concern. I bought a brand new Ford 3000 starter for $125 without core exchange(good because me or someone else may restore it to original someday). The starter normally fits on the right side of a Ford but by turning it 90 deg. it fits the left side of a Major. Only one minor complaint; the solenoid sticks out. No problem since I don't have the tool box. This is a larger and more powerful starter motor and now all I have to do is push the starter button and away it goes. I can email a picture of it on the Major if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I fitted a starter from a 4000 (same starter as a 3000??) to my Super Major a few years ago. What a difference in starting! It whirls that old engine right over. I did have to do some different wiring and relocate the toolbox. And the dipstick for the engine oil has to be bent slightly to pass the starter but otherwise is was a successful repair. And as you say, much less exppensive that repairing the old one.
