Why do that FMD´s make such gearbox noises?
Or is it just a worn out gearbox?
I was told that this is pretty normal.

The noise is normal. The gearbox in a fordson major diesel and power major is the exact same gear box as in a kerosine major. At least as far as I know. The kerosine major needed 90w oil in the gearbox because the gears are straight cut and because the clearances are very broaud. The 90w oil stoped the noise. But because the diesel major and power major added hydroulics the oil needed to be thinner. So in essence you are using 20w or 30w oil in a gearbox designed for 90w oil. That is what creates the noise. But DONT go putting 90w oil in your gearbox or diff. It is perfectly fine running 20w or 30w, It is just a bit noisier in a few gears. And 90w oil would kinda wreck your hydroulics. I will note that it was fordson trying to be cheap by not putting a seperate tank for the hydroulic oil. All they had to do to stop it was have a seperate tank for the hydroulic oil and they could have put 90w oil in the gearbox and diff. BTW. The noise is nicknamed the fordson crunch.

My manual recommends 90w for both, the primary gearbox and the diff.

Is it really bad for the hydraulics?

Every one I know says that 90w oil will wreck the hydroulic pump because it is way too thick for it. Also it is not good for any external attachments either. And my manual says to use 30w oil in the diff and gearbox. Mine is an 1967 I&T Fordson manual for a my 1960 power major. Anyway I use cheap 20w oil because it is about 70% cheaper than the cheapest 30w oil I have found. But no side affects yet. And I have owned this tractor from new. I am inclined to think it is a typo in your manual. Of course I may be wrong but I dont think I am. I just had a look at a past post. It said 30w or 20w.
